Youth Alcohol Abuse, The Interrelationship Between Coping Skills And Abusive Drinking, And The Need For Coping Skills Training

Recent teenage alcohol abuse statistics reveal that alcohol abuse among teenagers is increasing in the United States. What are some of the reasons for this? Quite a few alcoholism experts believe that wine, liquor, and beer advertisements brought into being by the media are a major reason for the escalation of teen alcohol abuse.

Other substance abuse experts articulate that the increase in teen alcohol abuse is due to the toleration and convenience of alcohol. Still other alcohol addiction authorities declare that numerous young people involve themselves in alcohol abuse due to the increased fretfulness that they experience.

From a slightly different point of view, since both parents in a number of families work full or part-time, the lack of parental supervision surely has to play an essential role in the increase in adolescent alcohol abuse. And last but not least, an assortment of substance abuse professionals think that the increase in adolescent alcohol abuse is due, at some level, to our permissive society.

One feature of adolescent alcohol abuse that looks like it is deficient in the alcohol addiction research findings, on the other hand, is the deficiency of educational courses that teach students how to augment their coping skills so that their abusive and careless drinking behavior is extensively decreased or eradicated. More precisely, science has made obvious the fact that there is an indirect link between poor coping skills and hazardous drinking.

In effect, this means that the more mediocre the coping skills, the greater the occurrence of alcohol abuse. To the degree that this is an accurate argument, why isn't coping skills education an important part of the academic prospectus in all of our high schools, junior high schools, and elementary schools?

Let us manufacture a scenario for explanatory purposes. Let us imagine a society in which all people are trained how to develop high-quality coping skills all the way from kindergarten up to and including their final year in high school. In such a society, when life gets challenging, people who are "coping skills experts" will be able to respond in a more healthy and more successful way, as opposed to others who are unsuccessful in their attempts to implement their coping skills.

More to the point, students who reveal solid coping skills will be more able to think clearly and demonstrate top-shelf decision making as opposed to teenagers who, because they were unsuccessful in their attempts to develop outstanding coping skills, gravitate to the "quick fix" of hazardous and excessive drinking.

What would happen in the above "ideal" society, in addition, if students not only got outstanding coping skills instruction but also received an excellent education that highlighted the short term and long term injurious costs associated with drug abuse and alcohol abuse? Emphasizing these types of teenage alcohol and drug abuse facts, along with more highly developed coping skills instruction, it is declared, would help teenagers steer clear of the apparent attraction with youth drinking and, as a result, would notably lessen the dangerous drinking behavior demonstrated by adolescents in our country.

There are clearly many defensible reasons why so many of our teens abuse alcohol. Such a knotty subject matter demands a wide-ranging and more pertinent response by our parents, educators, politicians, and students so that our teens can learn how to cope with life's problems in a more fruitful and accountable way instead of gravitating to unhealthy and excessive drinking to solve their problems.
