I've always loved models. When I was a kid, I collected all manner of them. I had model airplanes, autos, boats, trains - you think of it I had it. Of course, diecast models were very cool, but my favorite ones were those that you could assemble. I had a 1 48 scale model flying Fortress that was my pride and joy.
When I went to architectural school, I gave everything up. I figured that I couldn't make a career in models, and should do some-thing else that I liked. Little did I know what was waiting for me. I actually got a job in architectural model making! If you enjoy working with miniatures and have passable knowledge architecture, this is an astounding field to get into. When I make architectural scale models, I get to create complete minute worlds. Most of my architecture scale-model clients do not want to just have a make of the building that they're proposing. They want a model that shows the whole surrounding area together with the building. This gives background to the vision, and makes it seem as if it has already sprung to life. This is where architectural scale model builders coming in.
One of the great things about architecture scale model making is how painstaking it's. Despite all the advances of modern tech, there's still only one way to make an architecture scale-model: by hand. Sure, there are some perks that we have that preceding generations did not. The individual pieces of architectural scale models can be stamped out. This saves hundreds of hours of work, because you do not need to cut each piece by itself. However, adapting the architectural blue-print to an architecture scale-model, creating the pieces, creating the molds, trimming the parts, and putting them together, all still have to be done by peoples' hands. Nobody has sussed out a way to automate the technique.
I am thankful that they have not sussed out a way to take the individual craftsmen away from the architecture scale-model. This job is a dream come true, and I'm glad it cannot be done more effectively by machinery. I think it will be a long time before anybody figures out a different way to do it. If it were simply a matter of mass manufacturing architecture scale miniatures, it would be a different story. You could make one design and have it stamped out by a machine. But each architectural scale-model is custom-ordered, and so each must be custom made.
