As a wedding day & affair planner, I'm subject to more than my fair share of indignation & rage. You see, til people plan their first wedding, they not ever think about how much weddings cost. They wish to have reasonably priced wedding ceremonies, yet they also want to have all of the glitz and glamor. The issue is that, even if you buy low-cost bridal gowns, inexpensive wedding day cakes, inexpensive bridesmaid gowns, and all the rest, it will still add up to a lot of money. The bottom line is that, if you wish to have that reasonably priced wedding, you have to be willing to make sacrifices.
I'm not saying that having cost-effective wedding ceremonies is impossible. If you are willing to have a small wedding ceremony with only a few of your very best friends there, you can do it for quite a realistic price. You can make it distinctive by incorporating touches like top wedding songs. The problem is that, if having cost-effective wedding ceremonies is your intention, you need to plan everything around it. That means that you have to have a small guest list, make reservations at some inexpensive place, have some cost effective wedding day dress, rent a tuxedo for the groom, and play top wedding songs on a less high-priced sound system, generally scrimp & save at every opportunity. Some of my clients have actually taken their own wedding day photographs to save on the cost of hiring a wedding photographer!
The bottom line is that the most inexpensive wedding ceremonies are done in a judge's chambers. Everything else that you do costs further money. Some families go in to debt for years because of what they spend on throwing a grand, extravagant wedding. To me, it seems like a pity. When I meet clients who truly want to have cost effective weddings, I tell them to have them in the back-yard. That way, they can save on wedding day reservations - & play your top wedding songs on a boombox, if necessary! If they're truly ambitious, they can even cater it them-selves. If there are going to be more than thirty people there, however, this is normally not a very good idea.
I suppose that it all really depends on what you expect from your wedding day. When I first got married, all I wanted was some uncomplicated ceremony to give my love to my wife. If this is all that you want as well, it will be very easy for you to plan some cost-effective wedding day. If, on the flip side of the coin, you want to have an elaborate party with all of your friends & family, you will have to pay for it.
