When I purchased a used laptop off an online auction site, it did not come with a hard drive. In my search for a laptop HD, I discovered one way to get a disk drive with compact flash memory card.
I bought a bootable CF to 2" IDE Adapter. This kind of adapter allows you to use a compact flash card as your main hard disk drive.
This adapter connects towards 44-pin connector in most laptops. I have found that some laptop connectors use a pin hole in the centre blocked, getting the adapter not fit. I imagine you could snip off the pin or bend it back on the adapter and it should match, but I've not tried out it myself.
You can boot on almost any operating system from a CF card applying such a adapter. I would recommend using Windows 98 as your operating system. Windows XP makes so many read/write cycles that can shorten the life period for this memory. Windows XP needs no less than 3 GB to install. Windows 98 only
requires a minimum of 256 MB to install.
It is actually achievable choose Windows XP as your operating system. I would up grade to a microdrive. But beware, setting up Windows XP the standard way, it is going to get stuck in a endless loop. There exists a technique to get it to set up correctly, but I have not have worked it out yet. I think it will require files transferred from the regular laptop hard drive.
The best advantage to selecting a CF card for a disk drive is if your laptop gets dropped, the memory card is more likely to survive the fall than a regular harddisk.

I use this adapter and a 2 GB card for the laptop. It does work properly along with Windows 98 and I've added a Wi-Fi card for Internet connection.
