A Woman Manifest Symptoms Of Alcohol Abuse And Depression And Schedules An Appointment To See Her Physician

Cindy was a thirty-four-year-old physical therapist who knew that she had some drinking issues. For example, within the past seven months she has felt the need to have two or three drinks before going to work, four weeks ago she tested positive for a blood alcohol test where she works, two weeks ago she got arrested by the police for a DWI, and last but not least, for around six months she has started to fail to remember what she says and does when she goes out drinking with her friends.

Not unlike hosts of other individuals, Cindy's involvement with alcohol started out little by little and continued at this speed for quite some time because from time to time she engaged in sporadic social drinking. In truth, for nearly two years, every time she went out with her buddies to drink, she made sure to drink responsibly. Something about her drinking situation, however, seemed to drastically change when she divorced her husband.

Cindy got exceedingly gloomy about the loss of her husband, and as a way to stop her preoccupation with her depressing emotions she made up her mind to begin palling around more repeatedly with some of her friends who love to have fun and drink. It didn't take long, nonetheless, before her drinking increased to a significant extent the more often she went to and drank at dinner dates, private parties, family get-togethers, sporting events, and happy hours with her pals.

In brief, she was drinking and having lots of fun just like everybody else in her group of friends without much reflection about the alcohol short term effects and especially about the alcohol long term effects she has been manifesting. Yet somewhere in her brain she realized the facts about the negative alcohol effects on the body and on the mind and that she most probably required alcohol treatment but steered clear of the thought as much as possible.

One late afternoon during her annual physical examination, her physician asked her if she drank alcohol. Not wanting to tell "stories" to her healthcare professional, Cindy owned up to the truth that she frequently drinks more than she should. In point of fact, she stated that she commonly drinks in an irresponsible manner. Then Cindy informed her physician about her constant negativity. More plainly, she articulated that broken relationships frequently initiated a discouraging cycle of events characterized by increased drinking which further resulted in more disheartening feelings that, in turn, resulted in even more drinking. And this is explicitly what happened when her husband and she got divorced five years ago.

Cindy's healthcare professional then told her the following: "I am not trying to make an unprepared diagnosis, but with your medical circumstances we may be confronting two separate problems. As a result, I think we probably should make an appointment for you to get an alcoholism and alcohol abuse evaluation from my partner, Dr. Verlich, who is a drug and alcohol addiction specialist."

"Whether your drinking situation is more correlated with alcohol dependency or alcohol abuse is not clear, but I feel that further exploration is required. Then I think we should make an appointment for you to get a psychological evaluation from another one of my partners, Dr. Rudnick, who is a counseling psychologist."

"I want to get some additional information about your sadness and see how much your depression and drinking are associated." Cindy displayed her approval of her healthcare practitioner's treatment strategy and thanked him for his time and assistance.
