Andy was a high school freshman who regularly seemed to be living on the edge. Andy had a risk taking personality and regularly wanted to do what his older brothers were doing to have fun. Andy, then again, had a hard time accepting the actuality that as a fifteen-year-old teen he should not be drinking. In fact, however, Andy frequently drank with his friends after school, predominantly on the weekends.
One weekend, Andy made up his mind to drive around with some of his older pals. One of his guy friends was old enough to purchase alcohol. After buying some wine, beer, and wine coolers, Andy and all of the guys went to a recreational area and drank for approximately three hours.
After drinking something like nine alcoholic beverages, Andy started to feel queasy and then threw up. When he passed out on the baseball field, one of his cronies called 911 for immediate medical assistance. It was fortunate that the call for emergency help was made because when his cronies went to the hospital to see Andy, they discovered that Andy had been going through alcohol poisoning symptoms. More precisely, Andy had experienced an alcohol overdose.
After receiving alcohol poisoning treatment, Andy was in point of fact amazed to find out that he had overdosed on alcohol because he "only" had roughly five or ten alcoholic beverages. When he told this to the attending healthcare practitioner at the hospital, then again, the doctor told Andy that drinking five or ten alcoholic beverages over a two or three hour period of time could in fact be quite a bit more alcohol than can be metabolized by the body. The doctor further articulated how significant amounts of alcohol can cause the brain to shut down a person's respiratory system and that when this occurs, a person can cease to exist.
This was the first cautionary message to Andy that he was drinking in a risky manner and that there are repercussions deeds. The doctor told Andy that he was a lucky person because he almost died from alcohol poisoning the previous night.
The healthcare practitioner also conversed with Andy's parents and suggested that they get alcohol treatment for Andy. His parents were jubilant that Andy was safe and told the doctor that they would follow through on getting Andy alcohol treatment.
While speaking to his parents, Andy notified them that there must be a good reason why he did not expire and that he was grateful that he was still alive. He also told his parents that the strangest part about the entire drinking episode was that he had learned about alcohol poisoning last week at school in health class.
At the time, what his health instructor, Mr. Johnson, was articulating didn't seem to make too much sense to Andy. Due to the fact that he almost passed away, on the other hand, he felt that he should have listened more closely in health class and applied what he had learned to his personal life.
Andy notified his parents that he couldn't wait to go to Mr. Johnson's classroom and make an apology to Mr. Johnson for not paying more attention to a subject that was as noteworthy as learning about alcohol poisoning.
