A Health Instructor Teaches Her Pupils About The Importance Of Alcoholism Signs

Miss Jackson was a health teacher at the most financially challenged co-ed high school in the county. Although she had been teaching for only a few years, she had already established a reputation as an instructor with instructional techniques that inspired and motivated her pupils to learn and to think.

For example, one Monday morning at 8:00 she addressed the students in her classroom and said the following: "For the next two weeks we are going to learn about some usual alcoholism signs from a more broad-based perspective and we are also going to learn about a number of the best known signs of alcoholism from a less general and more specific standpoint."

"Not all of these alcoholism warning signs will absolutely substantiate that a drinker with a drinking problem is an alcohol addicted person, but the more signs that a drinker manifests, the more likely it is that she or he is an alcoholic."

Miss Jackson then told the students in the class that each individual would be responsible for studying four alcohol addiction signs and then presenting his or her results to the rest of the class by way of a five minute oral presentation.

The day after all of the students completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a piece of paper with a list of all the alcoholism signs that were presented and discussed in the presentations and in class. Miss Jackson then asked her pupils to study the list and rank the top ten alcohol addiction signs that were most indicative of alcoholism. After approximately fifteen minutes, Miss Jackson collected the sheets of paper and informed the students in her classroom that after she evaluates the results, she will reveal her findings the morning of the next school day.

Miss Jackson told the students in her class to go over the information she handed out and then to raise their hand if they had any issues, concerns, or questions. Within 40 or 50 seconds, virtually every student in the classroom raised her or his hand. It was apparent that the students had some issues, questions, or concerns about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism experts. As an illustration, just about every individual in the classroom disagreed with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism specialists, specifically, "Do you feel extremely ill when you abstain from drinking?"

Miss Jackson then told the pupils in her classroom why this answer was the most accurate sign of alcohol addiction. She underlined the fact that the chief difference between alcohol abuse and alcoholism is the physical addiction that is experienced with alcohol dependency and not with alcohol abuse.

Basically this means that when an alcohol addicted person all of a sudden quits drinking, he or she will suffer through alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the significance of alcohol withdrawal symptoms in the life of the person who is addicted to alcohol, the pupils started to grasp the key difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency.

A few minutes later the bell rang, signaling the end of class. Based on the buzz manifested by the pupils when they were leaving the classroom, Miss Jackson knew that she had stimulated and motivated the students in her class to stop and think about a noteworthy social problem and health issue that exists in our society.
